Zamboanga City team has emerged as overall champion in the recently concluded Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Athletic Association (ZPRAA) meet which was participated in by eight schools divisions all over region IX, including Isabela City of Basilan province. Both elementary and high school players from Zamboanga City managed to haul medals and trophies in individual and group events. In the elementary level, Zamboanga del Norte got second and third place went to Zamboanga Sibugay. But in the secondary level, Zamboanga Sibugay got second and Zamboanga del Norte landed third place. There is no rice shortage in the Zamboanga Peninsula, but officials said the region is running short of agriculturists and rice farmers. Mayor Mary Ann Cartalla said this town, known as one of the major rice growers in Western Mindanao, was not lacking in the staple grain, "but we are losing more young people to courses like nursing and computer science." Cartalla said the population of rice planters here has drastically decreased as more and more youth are lured to work abroad as nurses, or in the cities as call center agents. |
Two foreign countries have issued travel advisories warning their respective nationals not to travel to Zamboanga City, citing the "extremist elements" are planning to kidnap foreigners. The first to issue a travel advisory was the United States wherein its Embassy in Manila issued on Tuesday a message advising that it had received information that extremist elements may be planning to kidnap Americans or other foreigners. |

Asia’s Latin City - -Thousands of Zamboanguenos paid their last respects to Councilor Asbi Edding, an institution in Zamboanga politics, who passed away midnight of April 2 due to cardiac arrest. He was 59. Mayor Celso Lobregat, who expressed grief over the loss of Edding, ordered all government agencies in the city to fly the Philippine flag at half mast as a tribute to the late Councilor. Edding succumbed to severe brain hemorrhage 12:20 a.m. of April 2 at the hospital due to a stroke four hours earlier. He was interred following the Muslim tradition at the Sheik Makhdum Memorial Park in Zambowood few minutes before 1 p.m. amidst a 21-gun salute. |
