A devastating P15 million worth of properties was totally razed to the ground in less than three hours, including two buildings and 15 establishments along P. Lorenzo, Sevilla and Gen. Vicente Streets, 100 meters away from the City Hall.
Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP) Fire Marshall Chief Insp. Jaime Ramirez said that the two buildings, owned by a certain Wee Seon Ben and Sally Chan and 15 different stores were directly affected by the said fire incident.
He added that the two buildings housed a furniture store, a tailoring shop, a barber shop, a pharmacy, two variety stores, two Internet café, and several eateries. BFP report showed that the fire started at about 9:15 in the evening. The fire was declared out at 12:15 of April 13, 2007 declaring a general alarm. Initial investigation conducted by Fire Investigator F02 Mathew Selisana disclosed that the fire originated at the bedroom located at the second floor of Rashdi Coffee shop. Reports revealed that the said bedroom was allegedly occupied by a certain Jabar, family name unknown. 13 years old, and a close friend of the coffee shop owner as told by a witness identified as Edgardo Awox, the coffee shop caretaker. Ramirez added that the said minor allegedly left unattended a lighted candle at the room which is believed to be the cause of the fire. A follow-up investigation was conducted to locate the alleged minor but fire investigators yielded a negative result. The case is still under investigation. (Eugene A. Lasprilla)
