Zamboanga City (17 April) -- More than 3000 high school and college students are this year’s beneficiaries of the Summer Program for the Employment of Students, a program jointly undertaken by the Zamboanga City government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) 9. The first batch composed of 1,525 student-beneficiaries started their summer job yesterday. 295 out of the said number of students called SPES babies will be working for 30 days starting April 16 to May 29 while the remaining number of students will be working for 20 days from April 16 to May 15.
The second batch composed of 2000 student-beneficiaries will commence their jobs middle of May. Aimed at helping students finance their education, students coming from the different barangays in the city will be receiving a daily salary of P171.72 each where they will be working 20-30 days before classes start in June. Sixty (60) percent of the salary will be shouldered by the city government while DOLE will shoulder the rest. To accommodate more students, Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat increased the allocation for the program to P7M, P600,000 higher than last year’s budget. Aside from financial assistance, the city government will also help graduates under the program to land jobs especially in the city government service. City Social Welfare and Development Officer Francisco Barredo presented at least 8 SPES beneficiaries who are now employed after graduating from college. (PIA-ZC)
