THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is spearheading the removal of campaign materials posted on trees in this city in line with the celebration of the World Earth Day next week.
District I election officer Roy Cuevas said the removal of campaign materials will last for three days from April 24 to 26 to be able to cover all areas in his district.
District II election officer Jesus Posadas said they will also launched the same campaign in his district.
Cuevas' district covers 37 of the total 98 barangays in this city while the remaining 61 barangays fall under the jurisdiction of Posadas.
The two election officials said they will also gather evidence to file disqualification cases against candidates who posted their campaign materials on trees.
The posting of any form of campaign materials on trees is prohibited under the Omnibus Election Code.
Cuevas said politicians who aspiring to be leaders should be the role models in helping maintain Mother Earth in its best condition.
"We always hear them about caring for the people and community during their campaign sorties. They should love the Mother Earth first by not posting poster on trees," he said.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said it took several years for a particular tree to be healed from "wounds" is sustained from nails used in posting campaign materials in it.
