THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) will push through with the conduct of the elections in the island province of Sulu despite the recent skirmishes, kidnapping and beheading of hostages in the said province.
Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) assistant election officer Vidzfar Juli said there will be no suspension of elections in May 14 in any part of Sulu.
Juli said they will determine whether there is a need to further augment the police forces tasked to secure the conduct of elections. Earlier, Armm Police Director Joel Goltiao said he will tap the assistance of the 3rd Marine Brigade based in the province to assist the police in the maintenance of law and order during the elections in Sulu. Juli said they have already chosen other schools where to put establish polling precincts in place of the schools that were utilized as evacuation centers due to the skirmishes. Thousands of civilians are temporarily sheltered in different schools after fighting broke recently between the military and rouge Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels in Sulu. The province of Sulu is one of the provinces identified by the Comelec as areas of immediate concerns in the forthcoming elections.
