In the recently concluded 2007 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge National Finals held at the Metrobank Plaza in Makati City on April 14, 2007, students of the Zamboanga Chong Hua High School in a stiff mind struggle pitted against other teams from the fifteen regions nationwide over winning the much coveted title.
Christine W.S. Cheong bagged 2nd place in the 4th year individual competition while Cathlyna Eden G. Saavedra and Maedeliene K. Uy placed 3rd in the team competition for the Grade 6 level.
These students were coached by Mr. Samuel G. Gayangos and Mr. Joemarie A. Bandejas with Dr. Simon L. Chua as the over-all facilitator.
With the theme “Moving forward through excellence in Mathematics”, this annual event is a joint project of the Metrobank Foundation Inc.(MFI), Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP) and the Department of Education (DepEd). It aims to unravel the potentials in mathematics of Filipino children and provide participants with an opportunity to imbibe values crucial to the formation of the next generation of Filipinos: discipline, hardwork and team effort.
Finalists from all the regions across the archipelago attended the said competition which was graced by prominent personalities of the sponsoring organizations namely: Mr. Aniceto M. Sobrepeña, President of Metrobank Foundation Inc.; Dr. Placido L. Mapa Jr., Vice-Chairman (MFI); Mr. Nicanor L. Torres Jr., Deputy Executive Director (MFI); Mrs. Elvira Ong-Chan, Exec. VP (MFI); Usec. Graciano P. Yumul Jr., (DOST); Sec. Jesli A. Lapus, Department of Education; and Sr. Iluminada C. Coronel, MTAP president.
Indeed, the ZCHHS has made its mark in the field of education and its long list of merits devoted to the society as the “foundation of knowledge and center of intellectual ferment in the community through its tradition of scholastic excellence”. (PR)
