A young man was killed and a widow was critically wounded at dawn yesterday after an alleged policeman opened fire at the couple while sleeping inside a boarding house at Asuncion Drive, Barangay Putik, this city. City police director Sr. Supt. Manuel Barcena identified the fatality as Jerald Archival y Dinglasa, 20, single, and a resident of Zone II-B, Barangay Divisoria, this city, while wounded was Soledad Ejan y Amanilles, 43, widow, a resident of the said barangay.
Barcena said Archival suffered a lone gunshot wound on his head and died on the spot. On the other hand, Ejan sustained two bullet wounds on the chest and abdomen and was rushed to Zamboanga Doctor’s Hospital for medical treatment, but the attending physician declared her in critical condition as of press time. Reports submitted by Divisoria Police Station chief Sr. Insp. Haywein Salvado to the city police director identified the suspect as SPO1 Alquin Aquino, of legal age, married, assigned with Divisoria Police Station, and a resident of Divisoria. Barcena told Zamboanga Today that prior to the incident, both victims were sleeping inside their rented rooms owned by a certain Perlita Labeña y Sarte, of legal age, also of the said place when the suspect armed with a .45 caliber pistol forcibly barged inside then suddenly shot the victims simultaneously. He added that, allegedly, due to jealousy, the suspect took vengeance after he learned of the victims’ intimate relationship. Recovered at the crime scene by responding policemen were 3 empty shells and a slug of a .45 caliber pistol. The police believes that the possible motive of the incident is love triangle. Barcena immediately ordered a man hunt operation against the suspect who escaped after the incident. (Eugene A. Lasprilla, with a report from Dearly Laude of the Ateneo Mass Comm. Department)
