ZAMBOANGA Peninsula Police Director Jaime Caringal has requested the assistance of the military to secure the conduct of May 14 elections in the different parts of the region, especially in areas of immediate concerns.

Caringal said they need the assistance of military troops to ensure the peaceful and orderly conduct of the elections in at least six areas within his area of jurisdiction. Caringal's office covers the provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga del Norte and the cities of Dapitan, Dipolog, Pagadian, Isabela, and Zamboanga.

He identified the places where they need military assistance as the Olutanga Island, which is made up of the two towns of Zamboanga del Sur, the so-called triple "SB" areas that covers the towns of Sibuco, Sirawai, Siocon and Baliguian in Zamboanga del Norte and La Libertad, also in Zamboanga del Norte.

The six places were classified as areas of immediate concerns due to the presence of armed men allegedly being utilized by contending politicians and the proliferation of firearms there.

Caringal said his office lacks the needed personnel to secure and ensure the peaceful and orderly conduct of the May 14 elections in the six places.

Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) information officer Eugenio Batara Jr. said Caringal's request will be forwarded to the Army's 1st Infantry Division headed by Major General Nehemias Pajarito.

Pajarito's command has jurisdiction over the three Zamboanga provinces wherein the six areas of immediate concerns are located.

Pajarito said they are ready to assist the police in securing the conduct of the May 14 elections.
