Government authorities seized at least 23,000 blasting caps and at least Php 3 million worth of other chemical explosives, sketchy reports reaching the command and operation center of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) here on Sunday said.
A flash report received by Lt. Gen. Eugenio Cedo, area command chief of the AFP's Western Mindanao Command (WestMincom) stated elements of "Task Force Zamboanga" swooped down Saturday night on a port yard at Zamboanga City and found inside a container van several kilos of chemical explosives, hundreds of meters detonating cords and wires, 23,000 blasting caps, including other explosives materials in bomb-making.
Zamboanga police authorities, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and Philippine Coast Guard, with Task Force Zamboanga, are still determining the origin and point of destination of the said explosive materials, a WestMincom official said.
Government authorities cannot still determine the owner of the said chemical explosives as thorough investigation is still going on as of press time.
Gen. Cedo ordered the safekeeping of the seized dangerous chemical explosives and conduct in deep investigation.
He also alerted all government forces in the western Mindanao region, particularly Zamboanga Peninsula to avert any untoward incident, a military official said in a phone interview.
The WestMincom also directed ground commanders to redouble their security measures in all sea and air ports, malls, terminals, power, water and communication lines and stations and other public places. (PNA)
