SENATOR Richard Gordon on Thursday commended Mayor Celso Lobregat for initiating the strict enforcement of the gun-ban law in Zamboanga, saying "it does wonders to the peace and order situation" and fills the requirements of the people, specifically tourists and investors.
Gordon, former mayor of Olongapo City, said he did the same thing during his term as chief executive and that it his city reaped a lot of benefits out of it.
"Mayor Celso Lobregat has done something very salutary here and all these signage that say that guns are not allowed to be carried in Zamboanga are very commendable," Gordon, who called on Lobregat at City Hall Thursday morning, announced.
He also thanked Lobregat for the warm reception accorded to him and his party during their visit to Zamboanga.
Lobregat has advocated for the strict implementation of the firearms ban in the city since he assumed office in 2004. The senator, who is Philippine Red Cross chairman and chief executive officer, visited Sulu Wednesday and Basilan Thursday to check on the humanitarian missions undertaken by the PNRC in coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross and other agencies. The people of Sulu, he said, are also exerting all efforts to implement the gun ban policy in the area He had only good words for Sulu as he expressed optimism that peace is attainable in the province with all people working for peace and development. He said he has gone over the place, specifically Indanan and Patikul, and found the area to be resided by peace-loving individuals. "The preconceived notion that Suluanos are warlike or are mistrustful-I didn't see that, I felt safe and I went all over the place." Meanwhile, Gordon lauded the PNRC men and women in Zamboanga headed by Administrator Vic Liozo Jr. for their volunteerism in serving humanity not only in this city but also in other parts of the region where help is needed such as Sulu and Basilan. The senator was in the company of Asia America representative Al Santoli, PNRC Assistant secretary general Gwendolyn Pang, and PNRC Disaster Management head Benjie Delfin in his visit to Sulu. ICRC officials led by Western Mindanao delegate Christophe Guillioz and local Red Cross personnel led by Liozo accompanied the senator during the courtesy call on City Hall. From City Hall, Gordon took a boat ride to Isabela, Basilan and came back to Zamboanga early afternoon to meet with the Local Red cross Board of Directors and Mayor Lobregat, who is a PNRC Governor before enplaning to Manila.
