ImageMAYOR Celso Lobregat on Thursday distributed almost P500,000 as cash assistance to victims of calamities that hit various parts of Zamboanga City the past months.

A total of 131 families received the financial assistance from the City Government during turnover rites held at the City Hall lobby.

The beneficiaries of the assistance were based on assessments done by the City Social Welfare Office led by Francisco Barredo who is also in charge of providing emergency relief operations during calamities.

Of the total beneficiaries, 120 families were residents of Recodo, Ayala, Labuan, Pasonanca, Guiwan, Tetuan and Mariki--who were affected by strong winds and huge waves spawned by the enhanced southwest monsoon last July 10--while 11 families were victims of fire that occurred in different dates in Guiwan, Pasobolong, Vitali, Curuan, Tolosa and Upper Calarian.

Around P424,000 was released to the 120 families while P40,000 was released to the fire victims with individual amounts depending on the extent of damage wrought by the calamity. Lobregat said the financial assistance to calamity victims is in line with the city's commitment to social services.

Lobregat exhorted the recipients to spend the amount wisely. The amount, he stressed, is intended to assist the affected families in rehabilitating their damaged structures.

Barredo said the City Government has provided emergency relief assistance in the form of food to the victims immediately after the incident.

The recipients are properly assessed and screened to prevent duplication of names and unscrupulous individuals from taking advantage of the situation, according to Barredo.

Strong winds and huge waves spawned by the enhanced southwest monsoon killed one person and destroyed some 60 houses and a mosque in five barangays in the city last July 10.

The City Government through the City Social Welfare and Development Office provided immediate relief assistance to the families affected and shouldered the burial expenses and other needs of Elvie Magday, the lone fatality in the incident.

Personnel from the City Social Welfare Office and the City Treasurer's Office assisted in the distribution.
