At least fourteen people were injured last night when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded inside the Plaza Pershing fronting the City Mart, this city. The police reported that unidentified suspects placed the homemade bomb under a concrete bench that exploded around 7:30 p.m. sending concrete debris and broken glasses as far as twenty meters from the area of the blast. The twelve victims who were taken to the Zamboanga City Medical Center were identified as Hussain Jallao, 18, of Lower Calarian, Gark Muy Yang, 62, married of Putik, Michor Obingan, 18, of Tumaga, Rene Otero, 32, married, of Lustre, Roger Plamor, 19, of Lustre, Annan Alnasin, 32, Sta. Catalina, Dyan Pamalison, 24, Canelar Moret, Sharwina Omar, 18, Sta. Catalaina, Sharif Lipain, 18, Pasonanca, Fhaizar Bagis, 19, Sta. Catalina, Raymond Albay, 17, of Rio Hondo and an identified woman. Two other victims who are still unidentified as of press time were taken to the Brent Hospital, the police said.
Police investigators disclosed they are still trying to identify witnesses who might have seen the suspects plant the explosives, and possibly identify them. City officials led by Mayor Celso Lobregat and Vice Mayor Mannix Dalipe who were at the hospital have immediately condemned the dastardly act, as they call on the police to identify and arrest the suspects. Lobregat said that the city government would shoulder the medicines of the victims. Dalipe for his part urge the people to be calm saying the police are on top of the situation. Other officials who visited the hospital were Councilors Rudy Lim, Kim Elago, Lilia Nuño, City Health Officer Dr. Rodel Agbulos and others. (Nonong Santiago)
