A nursing student from the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) bagged the title in this year’s Chabacano songfest held Tuesday night at a local hotel in celebration of the Fiesta Hermosa 2007. Jaycie Dinglasa, a graduating student, bested nine other contestants with his outstanding performance of the song “Pasea na Wow Zamboanga”. He received P10, 000 -n cash and trophy from Mayor Celso Lobregat. Second placer was Roger Miranda who sang “Zamboanga Yo Ta Ama”. He received P5, 000 and a trophy. Connie Rojas placed third for her piece “Pasya Ya, Pasya Quita” and received P3, 000 and a trophy.
Miranda’s piece “Zamboanga Yo Ta Ama” was also adjudged as the best in composition that also won for the composer P3,000 cash. The non-winners received P1,500 each as consolation prizes. Mayor Celso Lobregat who welcomed the participants and guests to the Chabacano Song Festival described chabacano songs as truly a “mirror of one’s soul” as it reflects the Zamboanga’s multi-colored and multi-hued culture and heritage. He vowed to continue with the song festival, which is now on its 25th year, in line with his administration’s thrust to preserve the chabacano language, the very aspect that makes Zamboanga unique from other cities in the country and entire Asia . “Truly Zamboanga is Asia’s Latin City, ” Lobregat stressed as he justified the new branding with historical accounts. The 25th Chabacano Song Festival, organized by the City Tourism Division under the Office of the Mayor, is a major event in the Fiesta Hermosa 2007 which is in celebration of the feast day of the Lady of the Pillar. The program was conceived during the time of the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat and was primarily to propagate chabacano, a Spanish derivative language that traces its origin to Latin. The songfest was graced by members of the City Council, department heads and visitors from as far as the United States , Canada and Japan .
