Beijing mounted a light and sound spectacle to usher in the New Year. Other cities featured in the international news were Berlin, Edinburgh, London and Sydney – which all put up spectacular fireworks displays. Thousands of people watched the displays, many waiting for hours in the cold (except in Sydney where it is summer). Although I saw only snippets of the fireworks, and only on TV, I could not help being impressed.
